How to Set Up a Tank for Lake Tanganyika Cichlids: Water Chemistry Basics

Most beginner fishkeeping advice assumes you're working toward soft, slightly acidic to neutral water — that's what suits the tetras, community livebearers, and Amazon-basin cichlids most starter guides are written around. Lake Tanganyika cichlids need close to the opposite. If you're setting up your first Tanganyika tank using general community-tank advice, you'll likely end up fighting your own water chemistry the whole way.

Lake Tanganyika is one of the oldest and most mineral-rich lakes in the world, and its residents have evolved around that for millions of years. In practice, that means aiming for hard, alkaline water — a pH somewhere in the 7.8 to 9.0 range, general hardness around 10 to 20 dGH, and stable temperatures between 24 and 27°C. Exact targets vary a bit by species, which is why we list specific water parameters on every species' own page rather than one blanket number for the whole lake.

The single most useful thing to understand before you touch a test kit is the difference between pH and hardness, because they get confused constantly. pH tells you how acidic or alkaline the water is right now. Hardness (general hardness, GH, and carbonate hardness, KH) tells you how much dissolved mineral content is in the water, and how strongly it resists pH changes. Soft water has very little buffering capacity, so its pH can swing wildly with almost no warning. Hard, mineral-rich water — like Tanganyika's — holds its pH steady even under load. That stability is arguably more important to these fish than hitting an exact number.

Most Australian tap water is nowhere near this on its own — supply hardness varies a lot by region, but very few municipal supplies are naturally in Tanganyika's range straight out of the tap. That's not a problem, it just means your setup needs to actively build hardness and buffering capacity rather than relying on tap water alone.

The most reliable way to do that is through what's actually in the tank. Crushed coral, aragonite sand, and limestone-based rock all slowly dissolve calcium carbonate into the water, which raises both hardness and pH, and — critically — keeps doing it continuously rather than as a one-off dose. That's a big part of why Tanganyika tanks are so often set up over a coral sand or crushed coral substrate with plenty of rockwork: it's not just aesthetic, it's doing ongoing chemistry work for you. It's a much more forgiving approach for a beginner than trying to hit an exact number with liquid additives and hoping it holds.

Test before you buy fish, not after. Set the tank up, get the substrate and rockwork in, let it cycle properly, and test pH, GH and KH over at least a week or two before your order arrives — one good reading doesn't tell you whether the tank is actually stable yet. If your numbers are drifting or well outside range, it's much easier to fix an empty tank than one with fish already adjusting to it.
