Why it matters

Why captive-bred Tanganyikans matter in Australia

Australia’s biosecurity import rules mean many Lake Tanganyika species simply cannot be legally brought into the country. For a lot of the fish in the hobby here, captive-bred lines from local breeders are the only legal and sustainable way to keep them available.

Buying captive-bred also means fish that are already adjusted to Australian tap water and local conditions, without the stress, disease risk and mortality that comes with wild-caught imports — and it keeps genetic lines going for species that would otherwise disappear from the local hobby.
